A Nebraska tornado swept away their mother when Leni was nine and her sister Amelia was twelve. Though bound together by tragedy, the sisters grow apart—Leni wrapping herself in silence and solitude while Amelia craves the chaos of a large, close-knit family.

Following their different paths, Leni becomes a librarian and Amelia marries into the large family she always wanted. Concerned with her sister’s narrow small-town life, Amelia insists that Leni join her husband’s family at their New Hampshire lake house for a massive Fourth of July reunion.

Over the long weekend, a stifling heat wave settles over the house and simmering resentments—between the sisters, between husbands and wives, between mothers and daughters—boil over, on the beach and in the kitchen and behind closed doors. As a tornado-like storm rolls in over the lake, devastating secrets are revealed, leaving no one unscathed.

Lost Mothers edition by Elizabeth Barrett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A well-woven story with a surprising ending. A great beach read that keeps a good pace and keeps you engaged the whole way through.
Elizabeth Barrett has successfully created what many writers find too daunting an extended-family lakeside holiday. Her intelligent and compassionate insights into the complex feelings and actions regarding pregnancy of several late-twenties women ripple among spouses, relatives, and in-laws, finally becoming a full-blown storm. Lost Mothers is a page turner well worth reading.
Was a great book to read, but felt it was a bit rushed towards the end, and felt there was too many characters involved who didn't add value to the story.
A nice little story. Seemed rather like a first novel. Good holiday/plane read. Excellent description of the location and characters ... enjoyable if a little lacking in depth.
If you have ever attended a family gathering of relatives, in-laws, friends and others, you will enjoy this story that centers on such a gathering on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire in the present day. The sisters Leni and Amelia relate to each other based on their childhood when they lost their mother at an early age. I enjoyed how the many characters stayed involved during the story. The book kept my attention from chapter to chapter, which generally alternate narrators. I read it in a couple of days and am looking forward to the next book.
This is not a light book and yet it reads with pleasure and ease. It's the kind of book that is hard to put down and such fun to look forward getting back to. The story is told from the point of view of two adult sisters who lost their mother when young. Over the course of a family reunion weekend, we meet, get to know and care about a gathering of people, who are struggling with life issues of family connections, mothers, children, death, fear, love. The author is a superbly talented writer and is able to have us join this weekend and become immediately drawn in to all the undercurrents and tensions through multiple generations. This novel is a joy to read.
Mothers read you stories, hold you when you cry, kiss where it hurts. Moms strap you into your high-end stroller and insist you defer your tears until they’re off their cell phones. Elizabeth Barrett’s mothers and moms and aspiring mothers defy such easy generalizations. They are complex, distinctly drawn, fallible, and utterly believable. Their every decision seems to come loaded. Have the baby you’ve longed for, and your husband will leave you. Preserve the ties to your divorced husband for your daughter’s sake, and open the door to a rapist uncle. Protect your son from scandal, and sacrifice your granddaughter.

In a vividly described July Fourth weekend, a hive of men and women swarm from overheated kitchen to bedroom to bathroom to lakeshore presided over by the queen bee from hell. Two sisters who have miscarried mourn their lost children and their missing mother. Ironically, the more fortunate parents around them seem to neglect or even resent the children they have been blessed with. Mothers, daughters, in-laws, and strangers form tentative constellations, stingers at the ready. They approach and flee the gravitational fields of the men they love yet never entirely trust, who abuse, ignore, or betray them.

Lost Mothers stalks difficult truths, grinding the rosy myths of maternity firmly under foot. The loneliness of festering secrets and disappointments have inured many characters to unhappiness and warped others. They are ever alert to slights, making preemptive strikes on those around them. Others manipulate, seduce, or attempt revenge all to gain some modicum of control over what they perceive as a hostile world. A few, however, summon the courage to close the gaps between themselves and a kindred soul, seek and offer comfort and solace to those they love or even to a promising stranger.

From a male perspective, this is a novel that offers real insight into the minefield of contemporary motherhood.
