A thread weaves through our lives, connecting our past and present into the timelessness of who we are. We find this same connection as we meet ourselves in others, dispelling the illusion that we are separate beings and opening the door to a heaven we long imagined, yet least expected. Through the eyes of his own homelessness, Carl Mazza takes us with him on an intensely personal journey, a bequest from his immigrant forbears, to tell how ordinary people, living through dislocation and chaos, are awakened through human meeting to a primal and gripping spirituality outside institutional religion. The stories in this book are true and powerful; you will be touched and inspired. It is an individual and engaging search for the meaning of belonging which ends in a surprising and compelling view of heaven where it is and how we can get there. Through an understanding of life experienced as meeting, the author defines a spirituality of powerful possibilities, a soul-force which is too often minimized by organized religion. Drawing from intimate stories over five decades of friendship with persons who have been homeless, he introduces us to people whose lives, though devastated by misfortune and heartbreak, open a vista on an uncharted horizon of meaning for our lives.

A main theme in my life has been the journey of creating a heaven of my life on earth, and what this might mean given the world I have been socialized into. In "A Least Expected Heaven", Carl Mazza also explores this theme. He details the world of mental illness and homelessness he was socialized into, how the people within the religious structures around him practiced or did not practice what they preached, and some of the many personal encounters which touched his heart and expanded his understanding of the spirituality bound up in meeting people face-to-face. The ocean of Godness includes us all, in this spirituality that can be found both inside and outside the church.

In my work of encouraging Christians, non-Christians, and New Agers to rise above their differences and work together for the good of all, I have felt the prejudices limiting each group from accepting another. In his book, Carl shows how spirituality is alive and well outside of religious and denominational boundaries, as well as occasionally within. Spirituality comes with the willingness to meet each other and personally experience each other as "human beings" rather than "human doings". I love being reminded that we ARE all emanations of God, our Source.

This is a wonderful, very understated testimony by a compassionate and tireless teacher. If you do not know the author, you should get to know him, at the very least through this book. Martin Buber taught us that all true living is meeting, Paulo Freire that every relation or situation is an opportunity, even a call, for mutual learning with the oppressed. Like them, Carl Mazza has spent his life inviting us to liberate ourselves by the profound power of ever-widening human encounter, dialog, and community. A Least Expected Heaven is an offering of vignettes on this beautiful path.
Wow! I want to thank Carl Mazza for telling his story and that of others in such a personal, powerful and meaningful way. His eloquent writing flows like a beautiful song and takes you on a journey within your heart and soul. I found this book hard to put down, yet was excited about saving some pages to read the next day. It is inspiring! I would highly recommend this book to all.
carl mazza shares his experiences in a compassionate and prophetic voice. i am so grateful for this book which both affirmed and provoked me. a true "keeper".
This book was very thought provoking and makes you perhaps see things in a different light. Carl's story is precious.
Words cannot fully express the emotion evoked by reading this book. It is wonderfully written; extremely moving; very thought-provoking and just an amazing story of lessons learned. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone!!!!! Do yourself a great favor and READ THIS BOOK!!!!
This unassuming look at who we are and how we meet transcends the dogma that can make our lives and our religion stale. In A Least Expected Heaven, Carl Mazza uses poignant anecdotes to illustrate how people come together and find one another at the table set for us all. This book is a sacred timepiece; a tribute to friends and an awakening to the saints of the streets and the woods. A hopeful account of love beyond charity and risk beyond reward, Carl humbly attests to the genesis of Meeting Ground and the vision that keeps the dream of the Beloved Community alive. His personal experience with homelessness serves as a thread woven into the binding of this book. Yet so many lives are inside, you must open it to see.
I had the opportunity to work with Carl at a summer youth camp in my teens and early twenties. While that was 30 years ago, the memories are as fresh as if they happened yesterday. This book is much like the man. He was one of the most approachable people with whom I worked in my youth and his openness made him a trusted advisor for many of us. He challenged us to not stand by, but to participate in the world and never forget those who are less fortunate. This book should act as a reminder that the problems of individuals who are looking for a sense of belonging is only greater now than ever before, but even today, one person can make difference if they try. My most cherished memory of Carl is his sense of humor, which I am glad to see also surfaces at times in this book. When I shared my interest in a career in advertising, Carl tried to convince me that more graduates of the Princeton Seminary School went to work for advertising agencies than Churches because of their skills of persuasion. To this day I still don't know if he was joking.
